音乐剧《吉屋出租》最早在1996年在外百老汇首次上演，这部由乔纳森·拉森创作的“神作”，讲述了在艾滋危机盛行期间，一群挣扎中的年轻艺术家在纽约东村“出租屋”中的生活经历。
The musical RENT was first premiered Off-Broadway in 1996. It was written by the late Jonathan Larson and is about a group of young struggling artists living in the East Village neighborhood of Alphabet City during the height of the AIDS crisis.
不同于当时代的其他音乐剧作品，当这部不拘一格、打破常规的音乐剧第一次登上舞台的时候，

By the time the show made its debut, the perceptions of gay identity had largely progressed. But in the early ’90s, it was still hard to imagine a world where queerness would essentially become mainstream.

And yet, the show focuses on a friend group of filmmakers, musicians and actors of all kinds of sexualities and gender expressions.The actors were black, white and brown; the characters were straight, gay, bisexual and transgender.

This is a musical that Americans have never seen before: young, oyster, smashing, like a burning fire in NY, with unprecedented power to break the monopoly of Broadway at the time, and also let the This art form of "musical", for the first time, stood with the "youth."
开演之始，《吉屋出租》便一举成名。
它在1996获得了普利策奖，接着又获得了托尼奖的最佳剧本奖、最佳原创作曲奖与最佳音乐剧，之后在美国百老汇开始了大量演出，还被改编为电影，在大荧幕上映。二十年间，这部剧开启了在美国的巡演，并将足迹遍布全球40多个国家，被翻译为25种语言。
It became a runaway success, earning a Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1996. It also wonTony Awards for Best Book of a Musical, BestOriginal Score and Best Musical. And it had spawned runs on Broadway and hit the big screen.The show has toured nationally in the states and has had numerous productions worldwide including Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands, Ireland, United Kingdom, etc. It has also been performed in 25 different languages.
