“Farewell my concubine”, winner of the 1993 Cannes Film Festival and 1994 Golden Globe award, is an epic, emotionally compelling movie, which intertwines the story of two Beijing Opera actors during 1920’s China.

The movie also explores the effect of China's political turmoil during the mid-20th century on the lives of individuals, families, and groups.

- Plot -

When Douzi starts as an apprentice in a training school for Beijing Opera he meets Shitou, a boy known for his skill to break bricks with his head. Soon, the boys develop a deep friendship that is destined to last 50 years. Together they go through the hardships of becoming actors of the Beijing Opera. Eventually they succeed and become famous for their performance of "Farewell my Concubine". While Douzi develops romantic feelings for his friend, Shitou decides to marry Juxian, a prostitute.

当小豆子从京剧培训学校当学徒开始的时候, 他遇到了以用头破砖而闻名的男孩小石头。很快, 他们就建立了深厚的友谊, 一段注定要持续50年的感情。他们一起经历了成为京剧演员的艰辛。最终, 他们成功了, 并以他们表演的 "霸王别姬" 而闻名。当小豆子对他的朋友产生浪漫的感情时 , 小石头决定娶菊仙为妻。

"Farewell my Concubine" is more than a story of two men and the women that comes between them. It also tells us a bit about China’s political state at the years 1920s and how the change of the political situation in China affects the daily life of its citizens.
