Schrödinger's cat, a famous thought experiment in Quantum Mechanics, illustrates a scenario in which a cat was locked in a box with a certain amount of radioactive substance. Under such circumstance, the cat had equal possibility to survive since its life or death depended on whether the radioactive atom decayed and emitted radiation or not.

According to Classical Physics, one of the two results would definitely occur, yet the observer would not know until the box was opened. In the world of quantum, the system was in a mixture of uncertain states when the chamber was closed, that was to say, the cat remained simultaneously alive and dead. Whether it survived or not could only be confirmed when the state was observed in the form of particles after opening the box.

It is just like the city we are living in, Guangzhou.

This is the place where we live: We strive and fend in ZhujiangNewTown. We settle and rest in Panyu. We take our children to school in Yuexiu. We savor Guangzhou in Liwan

In the era of mobile Internet, we pay close attention to the changes around us: The orange bikes can be seen everywhere. We pay with NFC. Black Technology and smart device have changed our life.

Yet it never occur to us that, these fronts will ever make a connection among Guangzhou and our lives. This city seems to retain its uncertainty, a state of being gracefully detached in its own pace. We taste the spirit and culture of the city, while at the same time, straying away from it, bit by bit, as we are often besieged by our career and life.

TEDx ZhujiangNewTown celebrated her second birthday in 2016. In the past two events, we probed into the symbiosis between the city and people through the past and present of Guangzhou, and explored the nature of human being and gender. It reveals to us that, there is one thing in common throughout the journey of our discovery – curiosity. It is curiosity, as well as our attachment to the city, drives us to keep asking questions and searching for the meaning and the future of Guangzhou.

This time, we are determined to open the box of Schrödinger's cat, and try to “unveil the uncertainty”, so as to search for the answers to these questions: In what way will the changes of the world make a connection with Guangzhou? How will the native industry, in turn, be brought into contact with the world? Five years later, or maybe in the distant future, what keywords and questions will we embrace and face?

         Keywords for 2017 Annual Conference

    Search For

Will be probing into the uncertainty of the world

How are we able to retrieve the history of Guangzhou in the era of mobile Internet?

Will machine learning and artificial intelligence change or even replace human being?

Is cancer curable? What kind of reforms will take place in medical care?

Will revolutionary changes happen to education because of the Internet?

What changes will date bring to everyone?

Is the reform of Sharing Economy be confined to cars and accommodation?

Is there a contradiction between digitalized humanity and humanized machine?

Where is the boundary between different disciplines?

    Where is our future?

We expect to find possible answers to these questions and portray the prospect of Guangzhou in the next five years by looking into those keywords.

More importantly, to search for is to break the current status and to open the box, putting an end to the uncertainty. We may not give an answer to the future of this city, but at the very least, we have taken the first step for searching.

Topic: 32 Dogs Inspired Sustainable Animal Rescue of the Future

In 2016, she founded Sutopia & Co., a social innovation start-up, which envisions merging social networking with e-commerce in the animal rescue e-space. The vision is to make animal rescue simple and sustainable on one simple APP.

After almost 2 years of running a shelter, participating in rescuing animals, and observing other rescue efforts, Sue observed setbacks in traditional offline animal rescue here in China and started to question whether traditional methods of offline animal rescue was enough to have a  real impact to sustain animal rescue. She believed that using technology and taking animal rescue online, would upgrade the possibilities to help animal rescue be efficient, simple, and most importantly sustainable. Sue's vision is to create the first comprehensive global online animal rescue resource and information integration platform connecting people from around the world by giving them a common e-space to help support and sustain offline animal rescue efforts.

    Huang Xiaoying

    #Educator#

    Topic:

Sensorial Education: Searching For the Evolution of Body and Mind In the Era of Intelligent Machines

She is the founder of the Fun Club in Guangzhou Children's Palace, and a planner of educational activities. Working with all sectors of society, she tries to create an inclusive education model that values students’ self-explorations beyond subjects and classrooms. She also pays close attention to new media, art nouveau and artificial intelligence.

Our bodies enable us to imagine and experience. Bodily experience is the initial step for children to step into object world. But with intelligent machines, such as cellphones and computers, children may be involved in abstract experiences too early. Activities for children to explore micro-feelings of their body can awaken their senses and construct personalized knowledge. Also, intelligent machines can be used to extent the boundary of body and advance its sensitivity, creating an open space for spontaneous explorations. How intelligence machines will influence our children depends on our choice.

    What is TED?

TED is an annual event where some of the world's leading thinkers and doers are invited to share what they are most passionate about. "TED" stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design -- three broad subject areas that are, collectively, shaping our future. In fact, the event is broader still, showcasing ideas that matter in any discipline. Attendees have called it "the ultimate brain spa" and "a four-day journey into the future." The diverse audience of CEOs, scientists, creatives, philanthropists is almost as extraordinary as the speakers, who have included Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Frank Gehry, Paul Simon and Sir Richard Branson.

    What is TEDxZhujiangNewTown?

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share in a TED-like experience. Aiming to trigger in-depth discussion in social issues,  creative industries, city development and Guangzhou, the establishment of TEDxZhujiaNewTown will bring together the city elites in Southern China and encourage the thinking and sharing for creative ideas. We are here to make Guangzhou a more interesting city!
