    Artificial Intelligence: Risks and Ethics

Is a step back necessary to ensure a wise use of AI?

AI, research and applications, is growing very fast in China and all over the world. Fascinating in itself, this technique interacts with many (most) other scientific fields (from medicine to transportation to education) and forces us to raise new questions about the organization of our societies. Our speakers have been involved in the development of AI for a long time and, tonight, they will focus on the ethical, political, and social implications of our societies' increasing use of AI. After a short presentation of their work, they will discuss the challenges and risks AI poses, and share their thoughts on how to address these risks.

    1. What are the new perspectives for innovation risks that the AI boom brings?

    2. How can we control these risks to make innovation and AI contribute to a sustainable development and help tackle the great global challenges we face?

    3. Learn from world renowned experts in AI debate about the ethical, political and social implications our societies are facing with AI.

    About the Speakers

Thomas Dietterich is Distinguished Professor (Emeritus) in Computer Science at Oregon State. He was an early pioneer in machine learning and has published more than 200 scientific papers. He is former President of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) and of the International Machine Learning Society. He is a fellow of the AAAS, AAAI, and ACM. He is visiting Tsinghua University under the Fulbright Expert Program.  He is well-known for his work on the risks and dangers of AI, for example how to create systems that still function safely when AI components commit errors.

Professor Dietterich will raise questions like “How can we be confident that AI-based systems will behave correctly and that we will be happy with the results?” He will discuss the aspects of AI software that make it difficult to ensure correct behavior, particularly for applications that involve ethical decision making in high-risk situations, and will give examples of AI systems that produced unexpected behavior in both computer systems and human responses.

Kavé Salamatian is a full professor of computer science at the University of Savoie. His main areas of research have been Internet measurement and modeling, network security, and networking information theory and he has published more than 150 scientific papers. After earning a PhD from University Paris Sud-Orsay, he has been a reader at Lancaster University, UK and associate professor at University Pierre et Marie Curie.  In a former life, he graduated with a MBA, worked on market floor as a risk analyst and enjoyed being an urban traffic modeler for several years. He is currently a distinguished visiting professor at the Chinese Academy of Science and also works closely with the Castex CyberStrategy Chair at the French National Defense Institute. He was the recipient of a Chinese Academy of Science Presidential Award in 2018.

He is currently engaged in research on whether networking is a science or just a hobby and if it is a science what are its fundamentals. In addition, he has been working on cyber-strategy, cyber-geography and the interaction between the Internet and society, especially on the impact of large scale Artificial Intelligence on societies. He has written a book offering a comparative analysis of national strategies of Artificial intelligence that will be published in March 2019.

XU Luping is the founding director of Open FIESTA Center and deputy director of Center for Nano and Micro Mechanics (CNMM) of Tsinghua University.

He obtained his PhD from Peking University in 2008 and spent 4 years in France where he worked with worked with Prof. Francois Taddei at Center for Research and Interdisciplinarity (CRI). Since 2012, Luping Xu turned back to China and started to work at Tsinghua University.
