About the Film:

Why do we call our planet mother earth? asked a nine year old a few weeks ago during a girl scout meeting about climate change and global warming. The troop leader was like many parents and teachers dumbstruck by one of those straightforward but yet so profound why-question children can come up with. He glanced over to the other adults slightly shrugging his shoulders and smoothly moved on to the next discussion topic without providing a satisfactory answer.

Director Terrence Malick gives in his 2011 film The Tree of Life not only an answer to this complex question, he unlocks in an epic drama set in the United States shortly after WWII an archetype of the world's mythologies. The concept of a sacred tree, the tree of life and knowledge, connecting all forms of creation, is explained through the life of a single man and his quest for meaning.

We watch a child grow up into an adult man (Sean Pean) and partake in his present life struggles and how they are related to his childhood past, in particular to his demanding father (Brad Pitt) and his loving mother (Jessica Chastain). They mirror throughout the film the role of father sky and mother earth, the male, creative-destructive force and the female energy of the nurturing-blossom parent stereotype. Again Roger Egbert: There is a father who maintains discipline and a mother who exudes forgiveness, and long summer days of play and idleness and urgent unsaid questions about the meaning of things.

Malick somehow succeeds to connect the life of a single person with the pulsating and infinite dynamics of the cosmos by adding footage of planetary constellations and cosmic events. He tells us a story about how each one of us is connected to creation at large and defined by its elementary forces represented by our parents. It is through his work that we can answer the question asked by the girl scout I introduced earlier: we call our planet mother earth, because she is nurturing and forgiving, protecting us in her bosom from father sky’s relentless and demanding might.
