余德耀美术馆项目空间将于9月22日推出美国艺术家莎芭拉拉•塞尔弗在中国的首次个展“博德加运营中”。本次展览，艺术家将通过其最新系列的绘画、雕塑、摄影及动画影像来呈现她对“博德加”的持续研究，观众也将有机会一睹艺术家最为出名的、以缝纫、印刷和绘画材料所构筑的人物肖像。

“博德加（Bodega）”这一西班牙语汇在此特指遍布纽约街角、由有色人种经营并主要服务于社区中有色人种的基础设施。塞尔弗出生并成长于纽约哈莱姆区的汉密尔顿高地。对她而言，博德加杂货铺的积极意义在于，它是当代都市中非裔移民文化交融的缩影；然而，消极的是，它同时也映射了各色人种在社会中的悬殊差距。这一项目是艺术家首次针对真实生存环境中的局限与可能而进行的探索，主要聚焦于美国的种族主义、种族隔离与贫富差距这类问题。

展览开幕当天，余德耀美术馆将邀请艺术家塞尔弗与《艺术新闻》国际版中国分社主编丽莎·莫维斯展开对谈，一起了解艺术家的创作背景，并深入探讨博德加这一社群设施的意义。讲座结束后，观众还将有机会跟随艺术家导览，透过展览进一步了解美国黑人的都市生活。

关于艺术家：

莎芭拉拉•塞尔弗，1990年出生于美国哈莱姆，目前生活并工作于纽约和纽黑文两地。塞尔弗曾于世界范围的多个美术馆与艺术机构进行展出。她的个展包括：“莎芭拉拉•塞尔弗”，电车当代艺术中心，格拉斯哥，2017年；“莎芭拉拉•塞尔弗”，太阳伞联盟艺术中心，伦敦，2017年；“功能”，T293画廊，那不勒斯，2016年；“纯品康纳”,木屋画廊,洛杉矶，2015年等。她参与的群展包括：“扳机：作为工具与武器的性别”，新当代艺术博物馆，纽约，2017年；“面对面，洛杉矶肖像收藏”，加州非裔美国人博物馆，洛杉矶，2017年；“欲望”，摩尔大楼，迈阿密，2016年；“一个星座”，哈莱姆画室博物馆，哈莱姆，2015年等。

关于嘉宾：

丽莎·莫维斯：《艺术新闻》国际版中国分社主编。1998年来到上海之后，她报道了诸多中国的艺术与前卫文化。

About the talk

Yuz Project Space of Art will present American artist Tschabalala Self’s first solo exhibition in China on September 22nd. In this exhibition, the artist will continue her study on bodega through her new series of paintings, sculptures, photos and video. The audience will also have a chance to see her well-known portrait - a combination of sewn, printed, and painted materials.

The Spanish term “Bodega” is a kind of fundamental corner store in New York, which is owned by people of color to serve communities of color. To Self, who was born and raised in Hamilton Heights in Harlem, bodegas at their best function as microcosms of cross-cultural exchange within the contemporary metropolitan African-diaspora; however, at their worst bodegas mirror the disparities projected upon communities of color by the society at large. The project is the first time that the artist explores the possibilities and limitations of a real-life environment, focusing on the racism, segregation and wealth disparity in the US.

On the opening, we’re honored to invite the artist and Lisa Movius, the China Bureau Chief of the international edition of The Art Newspaper, to talk about her artistic practice and the significance of this community avatar. The artist will also walk through her project in the gallery after the talk to help the audience get a better understanding of Black-American’s metropolitan life.

About the artist

Tschabalala Self (b.1990 Harlem, USA) lives and works in New York and New Haven. Self has exhibited widely in museums and art institutions internationally. Her solo exhibitions include: “Tschabalala Self,” Tramway, Glasgow,2017; “Tschabalala Self,” Parasol Unit Foundation for Contemporary Art, London, 2017; “The Function,” T293, Naples,2016; “Tropicana,” The Cabin, Los Angesles, 2015 and etc. Group shows include: “Trigger: Gender as a Tool and a Weapon,” New Museum, New York, 2017; “Face to Face, Los Angeles Collects Portraiture,” The California African American Museum, Los Angeles, 2017; “Desire,” Moore Building, Miami, 2016; “A Constellation,” Studio Museum Harlem, Harlem, 2015 and etc.

Lisa Movius is the China Bureau Chief of the international edition of The Art Newspaper. She has extensively covered Chinese art and avant-garde culture since moving to Shanghai in 1998.
