    Startup Grind Beijing presents

    STARTING UP IN CHINA

    Expectations vs. Reality

China is a difficult market for Companies and Startups alike. Join us for a Startup Grind Beijing Session about Starting up in China - Expectations vs. Reality. In our panel discussion we will cover the topics:

    1. Why do most of the foreign startups fail in the Chinese market?

    2. What are some factors behind the success of these foreign founders?

    3. What kind of startup ideas can succeed in the Chinese market?

    About the Speakers

Sarah Keenlyside began her professional career as a journalist, first as an investigative reporter, then moving to China in 2005 to help set up Time Out's first English language publication there. After writing and contributing to a handful of guidebooks about China, she became a source for friends and contacts looking to experience the country like an insider. It was at this point (post Beijing Olympics) that she had the idea to set up Bespoke Travel Company.

Initially a one-woman outfit, the business has grown to employ dozens of tour guides, experts, drivers and in-house tour planners who all contribute to vacations that have been lauded as some of the very best available. Nominated in the Greatest Innovation/Disruption category of the Travel+Leisure magazine-sponsored LE Miami awards in 2014, the company is widely recognized for its modern take on traditional touring.

As a result, clients have included everyone from Matt Damon and Metallica visiting with their friends and family, to major corporates such as Apple, HP, LVMH and Warner Bros.

Leandro Rolon is Co-founder & CEO of The 3D Food Company, a China based company which specializes in the development and production of 3D printed food, and of DeFacto Studio a 3D printing design brand which specializes in the digital production of customized goods and environments.

Today, Leandro and his team are bringing digital innovation to the culinary world with their state of the art 3D Food printing technology and end to end customization services.

Jim Fields is the Founder and Managing Director of Relay, a Beijing-based cross-border marketing agency that helps visionary Chinese tech companies to expand in Western markets. Fields founded Relay with the ambition to create the first truly global Chinese brand.

With over 14 years of studying Chinese and 7 years in China, Fields’ focus has been on helping Chinese tech brands creatively and effectively communicate and engage with Western audiences. His work has gained millions of views across various platforms, both in China and internationally, for clients such as Xiaomi, Tencent, Lenovo, Garmin, Hover Camera and many others.

Prior to founding Relay, Fields was responsible for launching British agency Studio Output’s Chinese business arm, which grew over 300% in revenue during his three years with the company.
