“London crowds use Snapchat too much,” says Crissi Vassilakis, aka Madam X. “In Manchester people fucking smash their phones on the floor and don’t give a fuck.”
The 24-year-old DJ grew up in Milton Keynes and recently moved to London but considers the Rainy City to be her spiritual home. “I’d be a totally different DJ if I hadn’t lived in Manchester,” she says, counting Jonny Dub, Chimpo and LEVELZ among her inspirations.
But it wasn’t just a one-way street. Madam X enriched the city, too, playing an integral role in bringing grime to Manchester as a member of BPM, the city’s first party collective promoting the genre (they booked the likes of BBK back in 2010). As a resident, she developed a reputation for spinning club-wrecking sets that navigated disparate genres.
Now she’s channelling that visceral Manchester energy into her new imprint Kaizen, which purveys club-focused grime, garage, dubstep and funky.
The goal is to create a family vibe with recruits Biome, Walton and Silas & Snare, before they push their sound through travelling label parties and Kaizen’s monthly NTS slot. “I want to keep it all about the residents. I want to build the sound,” she says. The praise heaped on Kaizen’s debut release and Madam X’s recent slew of international bookings, including a gig in Cuba, suggests things are building nicely.
In just a few short years, Madam X (Christiana Vassilakis) has become a key player in various underground scenes, perhaps becoming best-known for her contributions to grime, though also more than ready to delve into the bassier, darker side of house, garage, UK funky and more. Cutting her teeth as part of renowned Manchester arts collective Murkage, Madam X has quickly gone on to become a regular on Rinse FM and various BBC Radio platforms, also co-founding the BPM (Big People Music) record label and club night
For her Clash mix, Ms. X stirs it up a treat, weaving gritty grime cuts into sparkling funk, uplifting garage-house and soulful, electronic R&B, making it all seem like the most natural thing in the world. She also blends those darker grime textures with mellower grime instrumentals, showcasing some formidable selector skills throughout a cunning, creative and energetic mix. Essential stuff for those who want an insight into what’s lighting up the UK underground at the moment. Or just those who want to dance, hard. Here’s Madam X to explain more:
“The mix is full of recent stuff I’ve been playing in the clubs and radio: high energy, dark and weird sounds. There’s loads of forthcoming material from some really promising artists I’ve been backing over the years, loads of Manchester stuff, and a couple oldies. A lot of the tunes in the mix are coming out soon as part of a project I’ve been working on… Will announce soon. Enjoy!”
