上海 Shanghai | Ladies Who Tech in Action x Women in the Shipping Industry

我们都知道航海一直是男性主导的行业。根据国际航海组织（IMO），女性只占120万航海家中的2%，其中只有1%是水手。性别不应该是阻碍女性进入航海领域的因素。那女性从事航海会遇到什么样的挑战？该如何克服性别偏见？在这个过程中STEM扮演什么样的角色？Ladies Who Tech邀请了几位打破性别刻板印象进入航海领域工作的女性以及盟友分享他们的故事。

We all know that maritime and seaborne trade is the lifeline of the world economy. The shipping industry also relies heavily on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Not surprisingly, it has always been a male-dominated industry. According to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), women represent only 2% of the world’s 1.2 million seafarers. Only 1% are sailors. Gender should not be the reason in preventing women from entering the shipping industry. 

What roles do STEM play in sea navigation and ship building? What challenges do women face when entering this industry? How to overcome gender prejudices?

Ladies Who Tech Shanghai invites you to the Ladies Who Tech in Action forum to hear from women and allies working in the shipping industry on September 23 from 6:30pm to 9pm.

本次活动获得挪威驻上海总领事馆的支持。在过去的整个20世纪，面对激烈的国际竞争以及科技与技术变革，挪威依然在世界航海中扮演了重要角色，是世界上最大和最先进的航海国家之一。目前，挪威是按价值衡量的第四大航运国，排在中国、日本、希腊之后，美国之前。在过去的150年里，挪威的船只和船运公司在国际海运和贸易领域发挥了重大作用。

The event is co-hosted by the Norwegian Consulate General in Shanghai. Throughout the 20th century, despite fierce international competition and a series of technological and institutional changes, Norway managed to maintain its position as one of the world’s leading maritime nations. It is currently the world’s fourth largest shipping nation measured by value, after China, Japan, Greece, and ahead of the USA. For more than 150 years, Norwegian ships and shipping companies have played an important role internationally, transporting cargoes throughout the world. On average, the Norwegian share of the world fleet in the 20th century has been around 6%. 

另一方面，作为全世界公认的性别平等的国家，挪威海运行业所呈现的性别问题却与世界其他地方一样。长期以来，挪威航运业一直希望让更多女性加入，但迄今为止进展不大。为了解决这个问题，挪威贸易和工业部最近开始启动制定战略性的政策，以提高海事部门的平等和包容性。去年，挪威船东协会则提出了九项旨在改善行业内性别失衡的具体建议，尽管任重道远。

Norway is listed as one of the most gender-balanced country in the world.  Even so, the gender diversity in the Norwegian shipping industry is very much similar to many of the other countries globally. To encourage more women to join the industry, the Norwegian Ministry of Trade and Industry recently initiated a policy strategy for increased equality and inclusiveness in the maritime sector. Last year, the Norwegian Shipowners' Association launched nine specific recommendations that aim to rectify the skewed distribution.

At the event, you will hear about the Norwegian government’s initiatives and the industry recommendations from the Norwegian Shipowners Association. Three role models representing three most competitive Norwegian companies in the maritime sector will share their professional expertise and vision, as well as their career journey as women in the shipping industry.

Yaling Liu is the current Vice President of Sales & Marketing in Greater China. Prior to Kongsberg Maritime, she contributed in the R&D Department of Jiangnan Shipyard Co., Ltd., MAN Diesel & Turbo (Shanghai), and Rolls-Royce Commercial Marine China. 鲁玲燕女士为船舶设计公司 — 乌斯坦（中国）的市场总监，她于2012年加入乌斯坦，负责乌斯坦业务在亚洲地区的推广和营销工作，服务的行业领域包括海洋油气、海洋风电、和极地探险。加入乌斯坦之前，鲁玲燕女士任职挪威船东公司Neptune Subsea，服务其在中国和挪威的新造船项目。

Lucy Lu is the Marketing & Sales Director of Ulstein China. Ulstein is a ship design and ship building company, established in 1917, and headquartered in Norway. Lucy joined Ulstein in 2012 and was responsible for the company’s marketing and business development in Asia. The industry segments that she dedicates herself to include offshore oil and gas, offshore wind, and Polar expeditions. Before joining Ulstein, she worked in a Norwegian ship-owning company, Neptune Subsea, serving as assistant Project Manager and Project Manager of ship’s newbuilding projects both in China and in Norway. Lucy holds a Master Degree and MBA from BI - Fudan University.
